The EnergIIZE Commercial Vehicles Project is driven by six core principles, resulting in an equitable approach toward all applicants and their needs that promotes healthy communities, all while helping California meet air quality, climate, and economic goals.
Industry and community stakeholder engagement across all aspects of project design.
Leverage and collaborate on outreach across industry sectors and community groups.
Promotion of interoperable technology and forward-thinking energy management recommendations.
Incentives aligned to enable advancement of MD/HD ZEV adoption.
Advisory workgroup enhances applicant access to adequate project funding.
Equity metrics are central to all aspects of project approach and design.
The EnergIIZE Commercial Vehicles Project is a part of a statewide effort to increase market demand for commercial medium- and heavy-duty (MDHD) zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). This transition was mandated by Executive Order N-79-20 in September 2020, requiring all MDHD vehicles in California to be zero-emission by 2045, and 2035 where possible for drayage trucks.
In April 2021, the CEC awarded $50 million in Clean Transportation Program funding, also known as the Alternative and Renewable Fuels and Vehicle Technology Program (ARFVTP), to CALSTART to address MD/HD ZEV needs in California through financial incentives towards the purchase of infrastructure equipment and software. ARFTVP, created by Assembly Bill 118 in 2008, invests up to $100 million annually in various transportation projects using fees collected from vehicle and vessel registration, vehicle identification plates, and smog abatement fees.
CALSTART is implementing the EnergIIZE Commercial Vehicles Project through support provided by the California Energy Commission Block Grant, awarded via a competitive grant-solicitation process. EnergIIZE staff also includes Tetra Tech Inc., which aids with incentive application processing; and GRID Alternatives, which supported development of the project’s equity goals.
